AAUP Town Hall on Budget Cuts
Dear colleagues,
Across higher education, in general, and at Hopkins in particular, we are confronting the challenges caused by threats to and cuts in federal funding. Across Hopkins, unit chairs and directors have been tasked with proposing, preparing for, and/or implementing budget cuts that vary from one unit to another. The AAUP supports this bottom-up management and allowing units to make decisions and plans. We also believe that any cuts need to be done in a manner that ensures the fulfilment of our mission and the protection of faculty, staff and students.
We believe that “Budgets are moral documents.” Regardless of the moral significance of a given budget line, the choices we make reveal what we truly care about. As such, the AAUP chapter offers these guidelines as tools to help faculty and unit leaders navigate these difficult times, and ensure fair and transparent process. We have circulated this guidelines to unit chairs and directors and we will be glad to offer our support in navigating these challenging times.
We are also inviting all faculty and staff to an open town hall on budget, where we will discuss the implications of budget shortfalls, discuss the different concerns that our community members have and exchange views on best practices. We will also update you on our initiatives in relation to these concerns. The Town Hall and your presence will allow us to communicate your concerns and thoughts to the university leadership and ensure that these concerns are taken into account, and that all faculty, staff and students are supported and protected.
