Email to Unit Chairs concerning budget cuts

To: Johns Hopkins University Department, Program, and Unit Chairs

Dear colleagues,

Across Hopkins, unit chairs and directors have been asked to work on cutting discretionary budgets to varying degrees depending on how each unit is affected by budget shortfalls.

We support the university's policy of allowing units to make decisions and offer plans tailored to their needs. This bottom-up management will ensure an effective response to the the challenges we face.

We believe that "Budgets are moral documents." Regardless of the abstract moral significance of a given budget line, the choices we make reveal what we truly care about. As such, the AAUP Chapter offers these guidelines as tools to help faculty, staff and unit leaders navigate this complex process.

The AAUP chapter will also invite all faculty to an open town hall on the university budget and budget cuts on September 25th at 6.30 pm.

In this town hall, we will discuss the various concerns that faculty members and staff have, what we know about budget cuts, and the actions the chapter is taking in this regard.

You can RSVP and add the event to your calendar here.

In the meantime, we will be delighted to speak over email, phone or in person to discuss these questions, hear your thoughts and feedback, and offer any help we can.

Sincerely,

Ahmed, for the AAUP leadership team
